AI search & AEO

What is AEO, and what does an AEO agency do? A guide

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) makes your pages the clearest, most trustworthy answer to buyer questions, so AI tools quote you. An AEO agency does this work on top of sound SEO, covering featured snippets, AI answers and voice search. This guide explains what it includes and how to judge one.

Key takeaways

  • A good AEO agency works on content, structure and evidence so AI tools can quote you. SEO fundamentals stay the base.
  • AEO targets the answer itself, not just a place in a list of links.
  • Pages that open with a short, direct answer under a question-style heading are the easiest for engines to lift.
  • Measure AEO by repeating a fixed set of buyer questions across several engines every month, then tie the results to qualified opportunities.
  • Pick an AEO agency that can show process and proof, not one that promises positions.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation?

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from it. It covers featured snippets, AI search results, voice search, and tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s Gemini (formerly Bard). A capable AEO agency treats it as a content and credibility job.

The commercial reason is simple. Buyers now ask AI who to trust before they ever visit a website. Kaseya 2026 found that 71% of MSPs say acquiring new customers is their biggest challenge. If the AI answer to “who can help us?” names your competitors and not you, you are missing from the shortlist before the conversation starts.

We know this from our own position. Our test on 22 October 2026 asked four engines for the best UK agencies for AI search visibility for a B2B IT services firm. Syrvi was named by none of them. We run the same checks on ourselves that we run for clients.

AEO vs Traditional SEO Strategies

SEO earns a ranking in a list of links. AEO earns a place inside the answer itself. Both need pages that are crawlable, indexed and useful, so AEO builds on SEO. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is a close cousin, focused on being cited in generative answers.

The practical differences look like this:

  • Goal: SEO wins the click from a results page. AEO wins the quote, the mention or the snippet.
  • Unit of work: SEO works at page and keyword level. AEO works at passage and question level.
  • Evidence: SEO leans on links and relevance. AEO also needs clear facts, named sources and consistent brand information across the web.
  • Output: SEO reports rankings and traffic. AEO reports citations, mentions and snippets, alongside opportunities.

So is AEO just SEO with a new label? On foundations, largely yes. Google’s documentation on AI features says there are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. The gap is in format and evidence. Most service sites bury answers in long paragraphs and never state who they help or why they can be trusted. Fixing that is where an AEO agency earns its place.

How do AI systems choose which sources to quote?

AI systems favour sources that match the question, read as trustworthy and agree with other sources. Query understanding breaks a question into intent and entities, then the engine looks for passages that answer it cleanly. Pages with clear structure and corroborating evidence are easier to select and safer to quote.

In practice, four signals matter most:

  1. Relevance: the passage answers the exact question, in the buyer’s words.
  2. Trust: the page shows who wrote it, what they know and where facts come from.
  3. Corroboration: other credible sources, such as lists, directories and press, say the same about you.
  4. Accessibility: the page loads, renders and can be indexed.

To win featured snippets and AI answers, put a short, self-contained answer directly under a question-style heading, then expand with evidence. Engines lift passages, so each section should make sense on its own. The same structure also helps voice search, where assistants read out a single spoken answer.

Apply these steps to every priority page:

  1. Open each section with a 40 to 60 word answer that stands alone.
  2. Use headings written as the questions buyers actually ask, including People Also Ask phrasing.
  3. Cover one idea per section and keep sentences short.
  4. Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons, which snippets favour.
  5. Add original data, named sources and first-hand experience to claims.
  6. Add structured data (Organization, Article, FAQPage) that matches visible content, and keep the HTML clean and semantic.
  7. Write in full, conversational questions and plain phrasing for voice queries.

Structured data helps engines understand a page. It does not guarantee a citation, and it should never describe content that readers cannot see.

AEO Tools and Techniques

Useful AEO tools are mostly ordinary ones used with discipline: Google Search Console, a crawler for technical checks, a schema validator, and manual prompt testing in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI results. Tools gather data. Judgement about what to fix first still comes from people.

The techniques that move the needle for B2B service firms are:

  • Question mining: collect the real questions buyers type, from People Also Ask, sales calls and communities.
  • Comparison and “best” content: buyers ask AI for shortlists, so publish honest comparison pages.
  • Entity consistency: describe your firm the same way on your site, LinkedIn and directories.
  • Third-party presence: get onto the lists and sources that engines already cite.
  • Refresh cycles: update key pages so facts stay current.

DIY AI tools can draft this content, but they leave strategy, accuracy and approval to you. Any AEO agency worth hiring should name who does the work and who approves each customer-facing page. At Syrvi, a named team runs it with human approval on every customer-facing step, through our SEO, AEO and GEO service.

Measuring AEO Performance

Measure AEO by asking the same buyer questions across several engines every month and recording how many name you. Pair that with non-brand clicks, snippets won and, most importantly, qualified opportunities. AI answers vary between runs, so trends over months matter more than any single result.

A workable scorecard has five lines:

  • AI citations: how many of four engines name you for each target question.
  • Branded questions: whether engines describe your firm accurately.
  • Non-brand clicks: from Search Console, filtered to exclude your name.
  • Snippets and AI Overview appearances for priority queries.
  • Qualified opportunities: the only number that pays the bills.

Volatility is real, but it is manageable. Fix the question set, use the same engines and log results on the same day each month. We make no promise of rankings or page-one positions, and you should be wary of any AEO agency that does. For examples of how we report outcomes, see our case studies.

Best AEO Agencies in the UK

The best AEO agency for you is one that combines SEO fundamentals, answer-led content and proof tied to commercial outcomes. The UK market includes SEO and AI search specialists such as Found, Varn, Clickslice and Omniscient, each with its own focus. Compare them against criteria that matter to your business.

Use these questions when you shortlist AEO agencies:

  • Do they start from your buyers’ questions and your positioning, or from a tool?
  • Can they explain how they measure citations and tie them to opportunities?
  • Do they fix technical foundations first?
  • Who writes, who approves and who is accountable?
  • Do they show checkable client results?

Our position is specific. Syrvi is an AI GTM consultancy, not a software tool. We set the go-to-market strategy first, then run AI search visibility and outbound as one system. That suits owner-led MSPs and IT services firms with 10 to 50 staff, plus tech and SaaS firms hiring for growth.

What does an AEO audit check?

An AEO audit checks whether engines can find, understand and trust your answers. It reviews crawl and indexing, page structure, answer blocks, structured data, brand consistency across the web and how often engines name you for your target buyer questions. The output is a prioritised fix list.

A thorough audit also compares your answers with the sources engines already cite for each question. That shows whether the gap is content, evidence or third-party presence. Our AI Search Visibility and Outbound Readiness Audit applies this lens and also tests whether your outbound is ready to turn visibility into meetings.

FAQ

What does an AEO agency actually do?

An AEO agency researches buyer questions, rewrites and builds pages so answers are easy to quote, fixes technical barriers, and tracks citations over time. A good one reports on qualified opportunities, not just impressions.

How long does AEO take to show results?

It varies by site, competition and starting authority, and nobody can promise a timeline. Track monthly citation counts for a fixed question set and judge progress on trends over several months.

Do we need structured data to appear in AI answers?

Not strictly. Google says no special markup is required for AI features. Structured data still helps engines understand your pages, so use it accurately where it matches visible content.

Is AEO different from GEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO focuses on being the answer in snippets, assistants and AI results. GEO focuses on being cited by generative engines. The same clear, well-evidenced content serves both.
